Seals on Kangaroo Island

Just back from a really interesting presentation by Dr. Rachel Gray who is doing a sampling on the australian sea lion pups at Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island.

She has worked on the Leopard seals and the Weddell seals in the Antarctic and documented a list of parameters to check on the level of health in the seals based on results from blood and fur samples collected from seals in the Antarctic and also some leopard seals which have been found in New South Wales.

Her findings will be important in monitoring the role of disease in pup mortality in australian sea lion colonies. She is starting with the pups at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island but hopes to also sample pups in other sea lion colonies.

Lots of technical terms and I am no vet or biologist but can see the importance of her work. Best of all - she has a high consideration for the animals and very good ethics in the colony, so I hope she will be able to continue her work and look forward to the results.

Getting late now - catch you later........
